KCSO Bomb Squad renders suspicious package in Oildale safe

UPDATE (2:34 p.m.): Around 7:56 a.m. on September 23, Kern County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a suspicious package located underneath a propane tank at West Air Gases in Bakersfield.

Deputies arrive and spoke with employees who had located the package underneath a propane tank in front of West Air. It appeared the package had been left intentionally, which seemed suspicious. Due to the circumstances, deputies initiated a Bomb Squad call.

The surrounding businesses were evacuated, and several roadways were closed for the safety of motorists in the area.

Around 10:30 a.m., the Bomb Squad technicians were able to disrupt the package and render it safe. It was determined that the package was not explosive. Businesses and roadways were reopened around 11:00 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing. If anyone has information on this case, they are asked to call the Sheriff's office at (661) 861-3110.

UPDATE (10:15 a.m.): The California Highway Patrol reports the following road closures due to the bomb squad investigation:

  • Highway 99 northbound off-ramp closed at Olive Drive
  • Olive Drive closed west to Roberts Lane
  • State Road closed north of Olive Drive to Pierce Road

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The Kern County Sheriff's Office bomb squad is headed to a business in Oildale after reports of a suspicious object, a KCSO spokesperson said Friday.

The object was found in the 4500 block of State Road, KCSO's Ray Pruitt said.

Crews are blocking traffic in the area as a precaution.
