On December 27th, 2015, at approximately 0800 hours, detectives with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Robbery/Homicide Unit responded to Kern Medical Center to investigate an in-custody death. 

The decedent, Shandye Ann Swank, was arrested on December 21, 2015, for a parole violation and misdemeanor warrant. 

Swank remained in custody until December 26, 2015, when she became ill and was transferred to a Kern County Jail Infirmary for direct observation. 

Swank’s condition worsened over the course of several hours, and she was transported to Kern Medical Center. 

Swank died on the morning of December 27, 2015, at approximately 0750 hours. 

The investigation is ongoing.
