Lock down, evacuation at Evergreen Elementary

Dozens of parents sat behind crime scene tape, across the street from Evergreen Elementary school on Monday, waiting to pick up their children.

The school was placed on lock down just after 9 a.m. after receiving a threat to the campus. Students were evacuated from the classrooms and taken to the playground area while the Kern County Sheriff's Office and K-9 units swept each building to building.

Some of the parents who gathered at the crime scene tape said they were upset they learned about the lock down through the news or social media, before hearing from the school.

"I wish the school would give us like some kind of information, at east confirm or let us know something good about our kids. All they're telling us is that our kids are taken care of," said Henry Vega a parent of two students at Evergreen Elementary.

Because of the lock down, no one can enter or leave the school and many parents didn't like the rule.

"It's kind of scary when you can't get your kids out of school," said Vega.

Students were allowed back into classrooms as soon as they were cleared by sheriff's officials and the school removed the lock down around 12:30 p.m.

An automated phone call was sent to parents about the incident around the same time and students were sent home with a letter as well.

"For it to happen at nine, and then I'm barely getting notified? But I'm still glad they did notify me, I had no idea until the phone call," said Naomi Fernandez a parent of two students at Evergreen Elementary.

Although KCSO said the school was safe and they deemed the threat not credible, some parents were still worried and decided to pick up their students and take them home early.

"It's just scary you just don't really know what the threat was and you don't know if it could come back," said Fernandez.

The Kern County Sheriff's Office and school officials would not comment on what type of threat was made.
