The Kern County Sheriff's Office sent out a reminder for parents and children to stay safe during their Halloween celebrations.
"The major dangers are not from witches or goblins, but rather from falls and vehicle/pedestrian collisions," KCSO said in a statement.
Another major safety concern is being able to identify candy that has been tampered with. Parents should also check all the candy their kids are given and "when in doubt, throw it out."
Parents are advised to go trick-or-treating with their kids 12 years or younger, or know the route their kids are going to walk if they can't go with them. Having kids trick-or-treat in a group is also recommended.
Setting curfews for kids to get back home or setting check-in times is also a very important safety measure.
Being visible during trick-or-treating can prevent children and parents from getting injured by a passing car. Children should be advised to stay off the street and wear bright colored clothes. The use of flashlights once it gets dark is also an effective measure.
