Two dozen abandoned animals were rescued by animal control officers on Friday.

22 dogs and two birds were rescued from an abandoned residence, according to Kern County Animal Services.

The animals were found in "deplorable conditions," Animal Services said.

The animals have a lot of skin conditions that resulted from the poor living conditions, Kern County Animal Services outreach manager Sally Breye said.

The Kern County Sheriff's Office and Kern County Code Compliance found the animals in the abandoned property and called Kern County Animal Services. All of the animals were transported safely to the shelter in northwest Bakersfield on Fruitvale Avenue near Meany Avenue.

"Today it was well over 100 degrees and they were out there in gear and face masks, you know saving these animals and picking them up out of these conditions and bringing them here so they can receve care and hopefully find homes," Breye said.
