Kern County Fire Department says a family of eight and their dog are without a place to live after their Delano home went up in flames early Thursday morning.

KCFD says they responded to the 11000 block of Stradley Lane near Schuster Road around 3:30 a.m. for a building completely engulfed in flames.

A family of eight, including five children, had been sleeping in the home when the fire broke out. KCSD says the dad was woken up by screams from his kids allowing them to escape without any injuries.

Additional crews had to be called because of the remote location and the large distance to fire hydrants. KCFD says between 20 and 30 firefighters responded, including a prison crew.

As of 5:00 a.m. KCFD crews were in the mop up phase, checking the structure for hot spots. As for the home, KCFD says it is a complete loss and the Red Cross was assisting the family.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
