Kern County's unemployment rate now more than double the national average

The unemployment rate in Kern County is now more than double the national average.

According to figures released by the Employment Development Department on Friday, Kern County's unemployment rate is 8.7 percent. 

That's a 1-percent rise from May. 

California's unemployment rate is 4.5 percent and the national average is 4.2 percent. 

According to the EDD, 6,200 more people were added to the workforce in Kern County, leading to the spike in unemployment rate.

From May to June, 4,500 jobs were added. 

According to the EDD, the worst unemployment rate in Kern County is in Mettler, where it's 26.6 percent, followed by Onyx with 26.1 percent and Delano with 25.6 percent. 

Pine Mountain Club has the best rate at 2.6 percent.
