An officer with the Kern Valley State Prison died Friday after suffering an attack in April by an inmate, according to California Correctional Peace Officers Association.
23ABC has learned that Officer Gallegos was conducting a search on an inmate when that inmate began to attack Gallegos.
According to officials, several other inmates started to attack the officer. According to the CCPOA, the officer was hit in the face, neck, and head several times. Officials say Gallegos was hit unconscious.
On September 14, Officials say Officer Gallegos collapsed and became unresponsive. He died a short time later at Hanford Hospital.
Officials believe his death was related to the injuries and stress of the attack.
