Local kids serve community during holiday season

Raised in Tehachapi, Layla and Milo Lujan saw the need in their community.

“A lot of people don’t have the opportunity to sit underneath a roof and eat dinner. They may not even have enough money to put dinner on the table,” said Layla.

Especially, during the holidays.

“It’s a time to get with your family and a lot of people don’t get that choice. So, I just thought that people [would need] somewhere to go to and eat and not [have to] worry about money,” said Milo.

With the help of their dad, Mano Lujan, they opened up a soup kitchen at The Shed in Tehachapi. A place that is free to anyone and everyone.

“I wasn’t surprised. Everyone asks me if I was surprised that my children approached me with this idea and to be honest with you, ‘no’,” said Mano. “I mean its not every day that somebody especially of their age do what they’re doing and give up their Sundays. So, that’s a big deal.”

The kids prepare, cook and serve their guests every Sunday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. They also welcome any kid volunteers to join them.

“As I tell my children, this is their community. They’re the next generation and they need to learn that they need to give back to their community to make your community flourish and do well,” said Mano.

Everyone is welcome, whether you’re in need or just looking for some homemade soup.

“You don’t have to have all these special things to help your community, you can give a little bit and a little goes a long way,” said Layla.

The family is hoping to keep the soup kitchen open for as long as possible.
