OILDALE, Calif. – A man is now in custody after leading Kern County Sheriff’s deputies on a chase in Oildale this morning.

A Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a car in the area of Airport Drive and Roberts Lane.

The driver, who was later identified as Ryan Nickell, got out of the car while it was running and fled on foot.

The car continued to drive, unoccupied, across for lanes of traffic on Airport Drive during the morning commute for students walking to Beardsley School. The car eventually collided with a fence in the 300 block of Airport Drive. A fence and shed were significantly managed.

Meanwhile, Nickell continued to run away on foot, ending up on the Beardsley School property. As deputies continued to search for Nickell, the school was placed on lock down. He was eventually located by deputies and taken into custody.

Nickell was arrested and booked into the Central Receiving Facility.

He is facing several charges including vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, hit and run, obstructing an officer, trespassing, possession of burglary tools, felony vandalism, and participation in a criminal street gang.
