Man drowns while swimming in Kern River

A man drowned while swimming in the Kern River on Saturday morning, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

BPD says they responded to an area of the river near Highway 178 and Rancheria Road at around 11 a.m. regarding a possible drowning victim.

When they arrived, they found a deceased man who appeared to be a victim of drowning.

The victim has been identified as 38-year-old Paul Parra of San Pedro. 

KCSO says Parra was tubing with his family in the river when he was seen falling into the water. Shortly after, he was seen floating face down in the water.

Witnesses attempted to perform CPR on the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
