A man is dead and a woman is in the hospital with major injuries after they were hit by a big rig on the I-5 near Twisselman Road on Wednesday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 43-year-old Jason William Paul from Oregon had been involved in a traffic collision and his vehicle was disabled between lanes. Paul had left his vehicle and was standing at the passenger side of his vehicle attempting to remove his passenger, according to CHP.

At the same time, Luis Salgado, Jr. was driving a big rig southbound on the I-5, north of Twisselman Road at about 55 miles per hour. CHP says Salgado did not see the stopped vehicle and the left front of his rig hit Paul and his vehicle.

Paul was killed and the passenger, identified as 27-year-old Laura Miller of Oregon, was taken to Kern Medical with major injuries. Salgado was not injured.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors and the investigation is ongoing.
