Man identified after being shot, killed on New Year's Day

First homicide of 2019 in Kern County

DELANO, Calif. — A man has been identified after he was shot and killed on New Year's Day.

According to the Delano Police Department, 49-year-old Zeferino Santos Perfecto was shot by an unknown person in the 700 block of Freemont Street in Delano around 12:22 a.m. on January 1. Delano PD says Perfecto was attending a family gathering at the time of the shooting. Perfecto was taken to the hospital, where he later died around 1:16 a.m.

His death is being investigated as a homicide. Delano PD says detectives do not believe this to be gang related, and that unlawful celebratory gunfire cannot be ruled out.
