The man who died in a crash Wednesday night on State Route 99 at Highway 233 has been identified by the coroner's office as John Wheeler of Bakersfield.

The crash happened south of Bear Mountain Boulevard. According to California Highway Patrol the crash started out as a pursuit after Wheeler failed to comply when police tried to pull him over for a DUI.

Wheeler hit a vehicle carrying a family of four stopped on the side of the road while the police were pursuing him.

Wheeler died on scene and the family was taken to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown.
