BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A man is in the hospital after jumping out of a Bakersfield police car on Highway 178 on Saturday.

It happened around 5 p.m. The man was arrested for public intoxication, according to BPD.

Officers said he was being transported to Kern Medical to be treated for injuries, but he broke the back window of the car and jumped out.

He is in critical condition but he is stable.

Eastbound lanes of Highway 178 and M Street are closed as officers continue to investigate.
