One person was killed in an accident on State Route 166 east of Short Road on July 4 at approximately 1:45 p.m. after their 1998 Toyota left the road and rolled over.

According to the California Highway Patrol, "the initial investigation found that a driver driving a 1998 Toyota was traveling eastbound on SR-166 east of Short Road in western Kern County at an undetermined speed. The driver allowed his vehicle to drift onto the right shoulder before he turned abruptly to the left. His vehicle then crossed both lanes of the highway and overturned in a dirt field north of the roadway."

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. There were no passengers in the vehicle at the time. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to a factor.

"The California Highway Patrol would like to remind all motorists to buckle up as they head out this holiday weekend."
