BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — (UPDATE Sept. 21) The Kern County Coroner's Office identified 36-year-old Jeremiah Adam Vanscoy as the man who died after falling off his bicycle and hitting his head on Sept. 5

A man was pronounced dead Saturday morning after falling off a bike and hitting his head in Bakersfield, police said.

The Bakersfield Police Department responded to a welfare call in the 7900 block of White Lane at 10 a.m. regarding a man on a bicycle. Police said officers located the man in question in the 6700 block of White Lane.

"Within a minute of locating the subject he is observed by officers riding his bicycle in the bike lane east bound on White Lane for when unknown reasons he fell off his bicycle striking his head on the pavement," BPD said in a news release.

Police said the man was transported by ambulance to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead. The man's identity and cause of death will be released at a later time.

BPD said a small amount of suspected illegal narcotics was located on the man.

"At this time drug use appears to be a contributing factor in the bicyclist collision," BPD said.
