A man was rescued from the Pacific Crest Trail after suffering from medical issues near Tehachapi on Thursday, county fire officials said.

The hiker called fire crews and was able to share his location using GPS coordinates from a smartphone app just before 8 a.m., according to the Kern County Fire Department.

A rescue helicopter eventually found the man and took him to safety, and he was transported to a Bakersfield area hospital for evaluation, fire officials said.

Prior to today's incident, the man had been hiking for a month on the trail (known as the PCT), which spans the West Coast of the United States from the border of Mexico to the border of Canada.
