A man is in custody after allegedly stealing a vehicle in South Bakersfield and leading the California Highway Patrol on a chase over the Grapevine on Sunday.
Officers from the Bakersfield Police Department were called to the 2100 block of White Lane for reports of a carjacking. They later learned that the suspect, 26-year-old Eduardo Salas, arrived in the area in a stolen vehicle from Los Angeles.
Salas then reportedly confronted someone in another vehicle, demanding the keys and stealing that vehicle. The victim was able to remove a 1-year-old child and both were able to exit a vehicle before the suspect drove off.
CHP officers spotted the vehicle on southbound Highway 99, and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit went over the Grapevine on the I-5 and continued until the vehicle was disabled and Salas was taken into custody by Newhall area CHP.
The victim was taken to Salas and identified him as the suspect from the carjacking. Salas was booked into the Kern County jail on four felony counts: carjacking, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless evading a peace officer, and carrying a concealed dirk or dagger.
His bail is set at $95,000 and he is due in court on Tuesday. Anyone with information is asked to contact BPD at 661-327-7111.
