Posted

A man convicted of two counts of murder tried to escape custody while in a courtroom on Tuesday.

According to the Kern County District Attorney's Office, Carlos Cervantes was convicted Tuesday of two counts of first-degree murder. Cervantes shot and killed Jeffrey Villegas and Jose Ceja in September 2016.

According to the D.A.'s office, Cervantes tried to leave the courtroom, but was subdued by multiple KCSO deputies after refusing to obey their orders to return to his seat.

Cervantes faces life without the possibility of parole. He's scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 9.
