A new year and a new addition to a couple families in Kern County. Teal and Eric Johnson welcomed a baby boy named Wyatt Chester Johnson just after three this morning.
"New year, new baby, it's perfect," said Teal Johnson.
Johnson was originally told her due date was December 28th, something she said she was excited about.
“So I joked with my friends that I wanted to win the prize for the first baby of the new year," said Teal Johnson.
Doctors later told her she would actually be due on January 13th instead, but baby Wyatt clearly wanted a shot at being the first baby born.
“I didn’t think it was going to happen, but then it ended up he came on new years day," said Teal Johnson.
However, Wyatt didn't come soon enough. He was the third baby born in Kern County instead.
At Mercy Hospital Southwest held out -- while his mother labored for 82 hours -- to be the first baby born in Kern County in 2016.
Imani Douglas and Lester Taylor went to the hospital on Monday when Douglas' water broke.
“We’re kind of bouncing around a couple names," said Douglas.
"She wanted to kind of look at him and kind of give him a name and match him and I can kind of understand," said Taylor.
Both sets of parents say their babies are happy and healthy and should be heading home tomorrow.
