More Americans traveling for Labor Day in 2016, up 10 percent from last year

With millions of Americans traveling for Labor Day this year, TripAdvisor announces the results of its Labor Day travel survey of more than 2,000 respondents.

Based on the results, 37% plan to travel for Labor Day weekend this year, up 10% from last year.  In fact, more people plan to fly this year.  33% will take a flight to their destination up 6% from last year, while 60% plan to drive.

The busiest travel day will be Friday, September 2, as 33% will be traveling to their Labor Day destination with more than one-third of travelers (36%) returning home on Monday, September 5.  This year, many people will prolong their holiday as 14% plan to return on Tuesday, September 6.

Of those driving, 18% will drive between 101 and 200 miles to reach their Labor Day destination, and 11% will travel between 201 and 300 miles which is roughly the amount of miles in a tank of gasoline.

 

The survey also asked respondents details about their holiday getaway and Labor Day activities.  According to the results:

The top Labor Day trips include:

1.         Enjoying the beach or ocean

2.         City getaway

3.         Lake escape

4.         Visiting a national park

5.         Resort retreat

 

The top Labor Day activities include:

1.         Go shopping

2.         Visit a park or national park

3.         Attend a cookout or barbeque

4.         Go hiking

5.         Take a sightseeing tour

 

The survey also revealed that more people will be traveling this fall as 80% are planning to take a fall leisure trip, up 16% from last year.
