Multiple assaults kill two, injure five overnight in Kern County

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Two victims were killed and five people were injured overnight in a string of multiple unrelated assaults in Kern County.

The first of four incidents occurred in Delano, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office.

Homicide deputies filled the 800 block of Maria Way shortly before 11 p.m., when a shooting killed 21-year-old Michael Ernesto Serrato Marroquin and injured two others.

KCSO says a suspect fled the scene and has not been located since.

About an hour later, KCSO receive another phone call of a body discovered in a trashcan in an East Bakersfield alley.

According to KCSO Lieutenant Joel Swanson, a resident in the 300 block of Goodman Street discovered the body by tracing a strong odor that led them to the trashcan.

Homicide deputies responded to the call and have deemed the incident as a suspcious death. A manner of death was not clear because Swanson said the body was in the process of decomposing.

The Bakersfield Police Department were also busy overnight.

BPD units responded to a stabbing call in East Bakersfield, where a woman and man were injured as a result in the area of Pacific Street.

The woman succumbed to her injuries and the man sustained minor injuries.

BPD identified 46-year-old Leonard Herring Junior as the alleged suspect, who was arrested Wednesday morning following a traffic stop near Fowler and Haley streets.

BPD Sgt. Nathan McCauley also reported a shooting that injured two men following an altercation in the 3300 block of Trojes Avenue at about 12:15 a.m.

Both men are expected to survive. An alleged suspect has been contacted, but McCauley was unable to confirm whether that person was arrested.
