The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for Kern County for its fifth heat wave of the year.

The heat isn't something new for this area, but it's easy to forget the basics to staying safe during the heat warning.

It's important to stay hydrated not just by drinking water but y avoiding drinks high in sugar, alcohol and coffee.

For those who have to be outside, taking long breaks in the shade are highly recommended.

Pets are also affected by the heat. They should have access to cool, clean water throughout the day and not be outside for long periods of time.

Usually the hottest hours of the day are between 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., but today they will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Kern High School District cancelled all outdoor and indoor activities for Monday.

Two of the local cooling centers are at The Mission and the East Bakersfield Veterans Building.
