BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Officials are investigating a fatal car collision along Highway 178 near Cowflat Road that occurred shortly after 7 p.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol traffic page, the vehicle hit a guardrail, rolled down the mountain, and collided into a tree that is above the water in the Kern River.

The CHP traffic page state's that the driver of the vehicle was ejected, but the Kern County Sheriff's Office says the driver may have been found pinned in his vehicle.

It is unclear whether the driver was the only person in the vehicle.

Several emergency crews are on scene investigating.
