UPDATE (9/8): 46-year-old John Daren Deegan of Bakersfield was identified as the person killed in Thursday's crash on Highway 178, east of Rancheria Road.

According to the Kern County Coroner's Office, Deegan's vehicle collided with another at 2:40 p.m. on Thursday. He was transported to Kern Medical, where he later died from his injuries.

ORIGINAL(9/7): Bakersfield Police said one person, two dogs were dead in a two-car crash on Highway 178 near Rancheria Road.

The area was closed while officials investigated, but has since reopened.
