A freeway overpass in northern California has been named after a pioneer of the Bakersfield Sound.
The new Merle Haggard Memorial Overpass is in Redding, Calif. on the Interstate 5 overpass at Highway 44.
A dedication ceremony was held on Wednesday in Redding where members of Haggard's family were invited to attend the unveiling of the signs. The signs were privately funded.
Known as a pioneer of the Bakersfield Sound, Haggard lived near Redding in Palo Cerdo for several years before he died on his birthday last April.
Haggard has a street and post office named after him in Bakersfield.
