KERN COUNTY, Calif. — The Kern County Sheriff's Office says a pair of travelers were rescued Thursday afternoon after their car was stuck overnight in the Piute Mountains.
KCSO says a 33-year-old and his 53-year-old mother had just moved to East Kern County and decided to travel to the Piute Mountains to test their new survival gear. However, they became stranded when their car slid off the road in the snow. After spending the night in their car, the man decided to hike until he found cell service.
The man was eventually able to call for help and volunteers from the KCSO's Kern Valley Search and Rescue Unit responded. They were able to locate the pair off Piute Mountain Rd., near Piute Peak, but were unable to get their car unstuck. The rescue team provided the pair a ride to waiting patrol deputies who were able to take them back into town. They did not need medical attention.
