A Bakersfield man was critically injured after a crash on Highway 101 involving thousands of pounds of spilled carrots.

The California Highway Patrol said Jose Castro Medina, 44, of Bakersfield was driving a big rig and hauling carrots on Highway 101 near Exline Road north of Paso Robles when he crashed into another car on Friday at around 4:30 p.m.

Neither Medina nor the driver of the other car was injured.

Medina's truck then crashed into a third vehicle, parked on the right shoulder due to mechanical issues, being driven by Jesus Garcia Santana, 47, of Bakersfield. Santana was critically injured in the crash and he was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Following the crash, Medina's truck ended up off the highway and onto Stockdale Road, where it spilled approximately 30,000 pounds of carrots.

The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Templeton CHP office.
