The Kern County Elections Office says a petition to allow medical marijuana businesses to operate in Kern County has been submitted to the office for verification.

Officials now must perform a random signature verification within 30 days. If the required signatures are met, the initiative measure will be placed on the ballot and will be voted on in November.

The ban on commercial cannabis businesses would remain in effect, according to the county.
