BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A valley oak tree was planted in honor of veterans on Thursday evening at the Bakersfield National Cemetery. A symbol of the loss families suffered when their loved ones never returned home.
The Northern Gold Star Mothers Organization and the Patriot Guard Riders attended the service to honor the families.
Karen Meredith, the President of Northern Gold Star, shared her story about losing her only son 14 years ago.
Other parents also shared their stories about their losses, and the honor they feel to keep the memory of their loved ones alive with the symbol of the oak tree.
A simple gesture honoring families that bare the cost of freedom.
