Police: Motorcycle rider doing "wheelie" collides with SUV in southwest Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with moderate to major injuries after he collided with a sport-utility vehicle while doing a "wheelie", according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

BPD said they were called to the area of Gosford Road and District Blvd. around 1:30 p.m. Friday for a crash involving a motorcycle and vehicle.

Officers said they determined the man was riding southbound on Gosford Rd. doing a "wheelie". While riding on one wheel, he collided with an SUV making a U-turn on Gosford Rd.

The motorcycle rider was taken to the hospital with moderate to major injuries and was listed in critical, but stable, condition Friday night.

Police said the driver of the SUV was uninjured and remained at the scene remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. A passenger in the SUV had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

BPD said it does not appear drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, but the collision remains under investigation.
