Just before 3 p.m. he was loading up his vehicle, one of the items being a backpack with a Glock 27 black handgun with nine rounds in the magazine, none in the chamber.

The officer left the vehicle unlocked and went back inside to say goodbye to his father-in-law, came back out and found a young man from the group home in his vehicle with the gun on his lap.

The officer said the boy reeked of alcohol and said "Whoa bud, what are you doing?" The boy said he was looking for a ride, to which the officer responded "Take it."

The officer then went inside to call police. He came back out to find the boy was walking toward the group home with the gun. The officer followed the boy in his vehicle, and heard a gunshot. He did not know if the boy was aiming to shoot him.

At that time the officer stopped following and the boy took off running toward the group home. An off duty Bakersfield Police Officer heard the gunshot and grabbed his service weapon and radio and reported the gunshot.

The boy entered the front door and encountered Veronica Branch, the director of the group home. According to the police report, Branch said the boy was panting and appeared to be drunk. She followed him to his room and he handed her a backpack.

Inside the backpack was a change of clothes and a half full bottle of alcohol. She then put the backpack in the backseat of her vehicle.

Branch asked the boy what the loud sound was and he replied "yeah, it's a firecracker." Branch then asked where it was and he said he didn't have it anymore.

She then walked into the backyard to see what the boy was doing, while she was outside she saw a "golf ball-sized hole" in the stucco under the window. Branch found a casing, picked it up and put it inside a zip-lock bag and put it in her office.

Officers arrived at the group home and set up a perimeter. They spoke with an employee of the group home who said Branch and the boy were the only ones inside. Officers asked Branch to come out and she did.

Then, several homes in the area were evacuated for hours.

SWAT was called in and when officers entered the home, they found the stolen handgun in between the mattress of the boy's bed, with one round missing.

This is where the police report has conflicting facts. Initial reports and in the police report, it sounds like two shots were fired. One outside and one inside the home, but only one bullet is missing and one casing recovered.

Officers saw the bullet hole in the wall and followed it into the backyard where the bullet hit the back wrought iron gate surrounding the swimming pool.

23ABC is looking into the status of the boy who was arrested that night.
