Customers who witnessed the robbery inside of Dollar Tree on Monday evening claim they heard the suspect shout he was committing the crime in the name of Isis.
No one was injured in the robbery, but witnesses said the incident was still fresh in their minds on Tuesday.
"You don't think your life could be in danger just going to the store," said a witness who did not want to be identified.
The witness was at the check out stand when the suspect entered the store with a gun and demanded money. According to the witness, the store was somewhat busy at the time with around 15 people inside. The witness said everyone cooperated with the robber and remained calm.
Other witnesses told 23ABC when the suspect entered Dollar Tree the suspect said he was doing it in the name of Isis.
The Bakersfield Police Department said witnesses did indicate something about Isis was said, however Sgt. Gary Carrescuo said they don't believe it is a valid threat at this time.
"Things of that nature will cause people to fear going to those locations, fear going to that store specifically, so that's why we're coming out and saying there's no indication that it's linked in anyway," said Sgt. Carrescuo.
23ABC reached out to Dollar Store for comment on the robbery. The vice president of investor relations, Randy Guiler, said in a statement "We are cooperating with police on their investigation. I am not able to provide further comment at this time."
The BPD Crime Scene Unit was back at Dollar Tree today as they continue their investigation.
While police continue looking for the suspect, the witness we spoke with Tuesday said he's just trying to get back to normal life as best he can."You don't know how to feel. You know, I'm angry, obviously, because things were out of my control, but I mean you just have to hope that the police can do their jobs and be able to catch the guy.
