Just before 7 P.M. Bakersfield police responded to the intersection of Panama Lane and Nadeau Street when they found a man laying on the road.
The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officers say several people saw a dark colored pick-up truck or SUV traveling East bound on Panama Lane -- going about 50 MPH.
Hugo Tamayo saw the accident and he says he tried to help the victim before police arrived.
"I saw a body laying on the ground and I figured I had to do something to protect these him,” Tamayo said.
Police say the victim is a white male and was approximately 74-years-old.
No one is in custody at this time. This investigation is on-going.
