SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego State University student who was hospitalized after attending a fraternity event last week died, the school’s president confirmed Monday.

In a message sent to the entire campus, SDSU President Adela de la Torre said: “It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to say that Dylan Hernandez, the student who was hospitalized last week, has passed away. His family gave their goodbyes late Sunday night. The family has given the university permission today to share this information, and we are working to support them during this incredibly difficult time.”

According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner, the student died of "blunt force injuries of head." The death has been ruled an accident.

A GoFundMe account was established to assist the Hernandez family, de la Torre said.

According to the GoFundMe page, Hernandez was 19 years old and a native of Jacksonville, Florida.

According to school officials : "On the morning of Thursday, November 7, the San Diego State University Police Department (UPD) received a 911 phone call to respond to a student in need of medical attention at a residence hall located in the 6100 block of Montezuma Road. University Police officers quickly arrived to the location of the incident and provided appropriate aid. The student was then transported to a San Diego area hospital."

Hernandez died at Alvarado Hospital Friday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner.

Hernandez was pledging Phi Gamma Delta, or "Fiji," according to the fraternity. In a statement to 10News, Rob Caudill, executive director of Phi Gamma Delta, said they are cooperating with the university and investigators to find out what happened:

“We are devastated by the loss of one of our own, and we extend our deepest condolences to the Dylan’s family, friends and classmates. We are working with the university and cooperating with investigators to gather all the relevant facts about what transpired. Our highest priority is the safety of our members and anyone associated with our organization, and we have strict risk management policies governing alcohol use and safety concerns. We have placed this chapter on suspension pending our review process, and if it is determined that any of our policies were violated, we will take immediate and appropriate action. Our organization believes in creating enduring friendships, pursuing knowledge, and building courageous leaders who serve the world, and we will continue to do everything in our power to live these values and make a positive impact on college and community.”

In light of Hernandez’s emergency, the school suspended fraternity activities after one frat was “alleged to have been involved in possible misconduct” during an event on Nov. 6.
