This time last year, KCSO has only done 8 searches on the Kern River. In 2017, they have done 40! Search and rescues are on the rise along with the missing woman still being searched for on the river. Here are some safety tips if you are near or on the Kern River.
Preplan, know where you are going. Tell a friend where you will be at and the time you will be back. Make sure you have a phone with you. Have a GPS device. Pack food and water and plan for the worst.
Also, the river has changed. Where there have been normal tide pools there is rushing swift water!
