Shafter Police arrest intoxicated man after standoff, firing a shotgun

On 03/05/17 at approximately 12:07 A.M., Shafter Police Officers received a call of a possible domestic incident with an intoxicated subject who may have access to firearms. Officers arrived at the 300 block of Walnut Street and spoke with family members who idenitifed the intoxicated subject as 27-year-old Juan Vieyra.

Family members safely exited the residence and informed officers that Vieyra was now alone in the the house and he had access to a shotgun. A short time later, officers heard what appeared to be Vieyra cycling the action of the shotgun. Vieyra fired several shots from the shotgun inside the residence during the course of the incident.

Officers gave Vieyra repeated public address commands to exit the residence and he refused to follow the officers' commands. Nearby residents were evacuated for the area during the incident. 

At one point during the incident, an officer discharged his duty weapon toward Vieyra but did not strike him. 

Several hours into the incident, Vieyra exited the residence and surrendered peacefully to members of the Shafter Police Department. Vieyra was booked on related charges and the investigation is ongoing.
