A suspect was shot after he and another person tried to rob a home in southeast Bakersfield early Tuesday morning.

According to Bakersfield Police, two masked suspects attempted a home invasion in the 700 block of El Toro Drive at around 1:30 a.m.

Police say the suspects were armed. One of the homeowners then pulled a gun on the suspects and opened fire, hitting at least one of them. Police say gunshots were exchanged. 

That suspect was taken into custody by police and transported to Kern Medical Center to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds. The second suspect got away. He was only described as being Hispanic. 

A total of five people were in the home, including three children.

No other injuries were reported.
