Swipe or dip? New chip credit card system
Posted

Swipe or insert? That's the question you'll be asking yourself the next time you make a purchase with a credit or debit card.

It's the latest technology aimed at protecting your identity.

Starting today, consumers across the country will have to use a new chip feature on credit cards. The high tech chip is called EMV and the goal is to keep thieves from getting customer's personal information.

When you insert the card, the chip creates a unique number that can't be duplicated. Businesses like Target had until today to change their systems. Shoppers today had mixed feelings about the new system.

Some say the new system takes too long while others say the extra protection is worth the wait.

Several businesses say they still haven't upgraded their systems yet. Those businesses, including mom and pop shops, will be liable if their customers become a victim of identity theft.
