Bakersfield police are noticing a trend of tailgate thefts in southwest Bakersfield.
According to a report from BPD's Crime Analysis Unit, 14 vehicles had their tailgates stolen between April and May. The data covers what BPD calls the "South Zone", which translates to a portion of southwest Bakersfield. The majority of the incidents happened south of Panama Lane and between Ashe and Wible Roads.
BPD does not know if the crimes are connected, but some residents think that thieves could be professionals due to their efficiency and the recent surge in crimes.
If you have to park outside, police recommend that you park in a well-lit area and keep outside lighting on at your house. They also say you should lock your tailgate if you have the ability; if not, products can be purchased to serve as locks.
Tailgates can be sold for hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars, and can also cost a sizeable amount of money to replace if yours is stolen.
