TEHACHAPI, Calif. — The results are in and Tehachapi Police say they received around 125 pounds of unwanted medications during national Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

On Saturday the department encouraged to residents to bring in their unwanted, unused, and expired medications for disposal. Officials say the community turned a total of 125.2 pounds of unwanted medications.

According to Tehachapi Police, those medications were sealed and turned over to the D.E.A. for disposal.

Police Chief Ken Kroeger said:

“Allowing our community to turn in these unneeded medications helps keep them from being stolen and misused. It also prevents them from being flushed into our sewer system which eventually is reintroduced to our water table."

The next scheduled Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be in October.
