BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) — A crash on Copus Road and Highway 99 resulted in one person dead, and another with moderate injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident took place Tuesday just after 2:00 p.m. when the Bakersfield Communication Center received a call of a traffic crash involving two cars.

According to CHP, a Kia Rio was driving westbound on Copus Road, when a Peterbilt 3-axle truck that was towing two dump trailers and hauling dry asphalt, was traveling eastbound on Copus Road. The crash caused the trailers to rollover and the dry asphalt spilled throughout the roadway.

The driver of the Peterbilt sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Kern Medical via Hall ambulance. The driver of the Kia sustained major injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by Kern County Fire Department personnel.

Copus Road was closed in both directions from SR-99 to Interstate 5 for approximately 7 hours for investigation and roadway cleanup.

Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor, according to officials.

This crash is still under investigation.
