Two guns belonging to a Taft Police officer were stolen from a car nearly 300 miles away from the city of Taft.
Five Taft Police officers were sent to Northern California over the weekend to work as security for an event held at UC Berkeley.
The Taft Police officers were heading home on Monday when they stopped for a meal at Black Bear Diner in Oakland around 11 a.m. While the officers were inside the restaurant, someone broke into the department's unmarked SUV, stealing personal belongings, as well as two handguns. One gun was a duty weapon and the other was one of the officers' personal firearm.
The Taft Police Department says the SUV was locked, but they have no rule on how to lock handguns inside department cars.
Taft Police will be reviewing its policies in light of the theft, and Oakland Police are now looking for security video from the diner and a nearby gas station to see if they can identify any suspects.
