Two people lost their home and several pets to a fire in Canebrake Tuesday night, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

On Nov. 28 around 6:30 p.m., KCFD crews responded to a fire in Canebrake, east of Onyx.

Crews arrived to find a trailer and an additional 500 square foot structure completely engulfed in flames.

Two people who were home at the time were able to make it out safely along with two of their dogs, but they lost four cats and two other dogs in the fire.

KCFD said because the residence is located in a remote area, there was a limited supply of water.

Crews were able to put out the fire but the home was considered a total loss. KCFD crews were able to protect a nearby travel trailer from flames.

The cause of the fire is unknown, KCFD said.

Red Cross provided assistance to the displaced homeowners.
