BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Bakersfield City Councilman Willie Rivera has submitted his resignation in a letter to the mayor and other city councilmembers.

He wrote, "It is with great respect and gratitude for the opportunity to serve the residents of Southeast Bakersfield, that I notify you of my intent to resign as the Ward 1 Councilmember."

He added that he has accepted a job with Aera Energy. Rivera is the youngest person to have ever served on the city council.
