METTLER, Calif. — The Kern County coroner has identified a woman involved in a fatal crash late Friday, April 26.

According to officials, 27-year-old Shannon Nicole West was the passenger of a BMW that was struck by a Dodge pickup truck on Highway 99 around Copus Road in Mettler.

The CHP says Robert Giron was driving the BMW Southbound on Highway 99 around Copus Road. Officials say Giron's car failed to stop at the stop sign and traveled directly through the intersection and in front of the pickup truck causing the front of the Dodge to strike the right side of the BMW.

West was pronounced dead at the scene.

Giron sustained major injuries. He has been arrested for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

The driver of the Dodge pickup had complaint of pain but was not taken to the hospital.
