One week ago, the Wreaths Across America Bakersfield and the local Civil Air Patrol asked for the community's help to make sure every headstone at the Bakersfield National Cemetery had a wreath to lay on it this holiday season.

Organizers made the plea for help because they had less than half of the wreaths they needed and 7 days for people to donate. Officials announced Tuesday, since then, the community sponsored 2,821 wreaths and have put them 95% of the way to their goal.

"We are confident that with our pending sponsorship heading to HQ via mail, that we have met our goal this year!" said Brent and Jillian Restive, the WAA Location Coordinators.

They said they will be laying out more than 5,000 wreaths on the ground this season at the Bakersfield National Cemetery.

Officials said they will update the public when they have their final count and when they expect the wreaths to be delivered to the cemetery.

The Bakersfield Patriot Guard Riders will escort the wreaths truck from the Harley Davidson shop on 7th Standard Rd. to the national cemetery.

This year, National Wreaths Across America Day is Saturday, December 14, 2019.

The local ceremony at Bakersfield National Cemetery will begin at 9 a.m. It is always a free event and open to all people.
