Man arrested in freeway shooting in Arizona

Posted

PHOENIX — A suspect in a drive-by shooting on a metro Phoenix freeway was arrested and is likely not connected to a string of recent interstate shootings, authorities said Sunday.

Christopher Hoffman, 36, was booked on several charges including drive-by shooting and possession of a dangerous drug, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

Investigators say witnesses and tips from the public helped them track down a suspect.

According to state police, Hoffman admitted to shooting at another vehicle on Saturday morning on the Loop 101 Freeway in the northwest Phoenix suburb of Peoria. Detectives said they also found evidence directly linking him to the incident.

DPS said a man in a tan pickup truck pulled alongside another vehicle and fired multiple shots, shattering the driver's side window and a rear passenger window.

No one was hurt and the truck exited the freeway shortly after.

Hoffman also faces counts of aggravated assault and discharge of a firearm in the city limits. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney.

Phoenix residents have been rattled by a series of random vehicle shootings on Interstate 10 between Aug. 22 and Sept. 10 involving bullets or projectiles.

A man has been charged in four of the 11 shootings as the investigation continues.
