Many websites experienced widespread outages on Tuesday afternoon after portions of Amazon's web servers went offline.
According to the company’s Twitter handle, Amazon was experiencing “high error rates” in its S3 web services. It’s not immediately clear what was causing the error messages.
Just before 3 p.m. ET, Amazon tweeted that they may have discovered the problem causing the outage, and were "hard at work repairing."
According to USA Today, the outage appears to have originated in one of Amazon's east coast servers, affecting sites and businesses located in eastern portions of the United States.
Amazon posted the following message on its web services page:
“We're continuing to work to remediate the availability issues for Amazon S3 in US-EAST-1. AWS services and customer applications depending on S3 will continue to experience high error rates as we are actively working to remediate the errors in Amazon S3.”
Amazon Web Services offers one of the largest cloud computing services in the world, as thousands of web pages rely on the service for back-end processes.
